WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY...THE PERFECT DAY TO QUIT TOBACCO
The last Monday in May 2008 is Memorial Day, a day set aside to honor men and women of the U.S. military who gave their lives in service to their country. How appropriate that the next important date on the calendar is World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). Historians tell us that the original Memorial Day, then called Declaration Day, was a commemoration of freedom and liberty. The WNTD, sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO), focuses on your freedom from tobacco and the prevention of tobacco-related disease and death.
In 2008, the WHO WNTD theme is Tobacco-Free Youth. You can show your strength and be an example to all those who admire and look up to you. Make everyone proud and set aside all tobacco products on Saturday, May 31, 2008. And it might turn into the first day of your tobacco-free life! You can be one of the thousands of young people around the globe who declares his or her independence from tobacco on Saturday, May 31, 2008. Imagine the impact your decision will have on your health, your family, your unit, your future! You will be stronger. You will be more ready for battle. You will be healthier and happier. You will have better vision, and you’ll have the respect of everyone who appreciates your hard work and contributions!
With these resources, you can take big steps or little steps to help yourself or other people stop using tobacco and raise awareness on how to stay quit. On May 31, you can encourage people to smoke or dip less, quit for the day, or quit altogether. Use the content on this page to participate in a World No Tobacco Day event of your own.
