Celebrate Independence Day Tobacco Free

Let Freedom (From Tobacco) Ring!
Happy Fourth of July, 2009

The past and present collide and fireworks light the sky. The day has been filled with all the people and things you love the most. The smells and tastes take you back to a carefree childhood. The grill, hot dogs and hamburgers, watermelon, lemonade, parades, and laughing children, and maybe it ends with you and someone special sharing a blanket at the lake, as you watch a firework show set to patriotic music. It sounds perfect, right? It’s a relaxing and stress free day.

This year the Fourth of July lands right in the middle of a weekend. That could mean parties, friends, music, swimming, and great barbeques. You deserve this break from the day-to-day responsibilities and assignments, and a holiday weekend is just the thing. But enjoy that weekend as a free man or woman. Free from the grip of tobacco. After all, it is called Independence Day for a reason. It’s your chance to show that you are strong, you are free, you are independent, and you are committed to a healthy life. Our Nation’s history is full of pride and a determination to guarantee freedom for everyone. That includes YOU. You can live the good life once you’ve made the decision to quit tobacco.

You’re a hard worker and you’re determined to do your best, today and always. That’s why you wear the uniform so proudly. You and your buddies have earned this break, the leave you’re looking forward to and, eventually, the day you step out of the uniform and into civvies. Stick around to enjoy what you have earned. If your health or stamina is compromised because you continue to use tobacco, then you cannot reap the rewards you’ve worked so hard to achieve. On Independence Day 2009, declare your independence from tobacco in every form. Don’t be fooled by tobacco and nicotine products that sneak their way into your life and steal your good health and service readiness. Just like the American Patriots in the 1770s who started a rebellion and rejected British rule, you can make the decision to live free from tobacco.

Reject tobacco, respect yourself, reflect your independence. Quit Tobacco—Make Everyone Proud.
