A National Cancer Institute-funded study found that the first puffs of a cigarette can cause genetic damage linked to cancer within 15 to 20 minutes. Scientists tracked polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and the effects were so rapid that it was like "injecting the substance directly into the bloodstream."
