A study, conducted at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, provides some of the most direct evidence that there is a causal link between smoking during pregnancy and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Exposure to cigarette smoke in the womb causes impaired breathing in early infancy, thermal stress, and low oxygen.
