On May 21, 2008 the Institute for Safe Medication Practice (ISMP) released a report regarding the strong adverse safety signals associated with the tobacco cessation medication Chantix (varenicline). Varenicline is increasingly prescribed within DoD in smoking cessation programs. The Office of the Chief Medical Officer recommends that varenicline not be used by personnel operating aircraft or missile crew members, and that service smoking cessation programs should prepare and ensure wide use of fact sheets for providers and patients on the risks and benefits of all drugs used in smoking cessation, to include varenicline.
