India is introducing new and graphic pictorial warnings on packages of cigarettes in an effort to reduce the number of smokers in the country. The messages will be printed in local languages, according to Tamil Nadu Voluntary Health Association, a non-governmental organization. A comparative study of smokers in three nations found that in Indians smoking increased deaths and disabilities threefold because of poor sanitation and nutritional levels of the population.
