The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced new regulations that forbid the sale and marketing of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products to people younger than 18 years of age. These are measures that, for the most part, already have been implemented by the states. Antismoking groups say the most significant aspect of the FDA's action, which goes into effect June 22, 2010, is that it marks the beginning of an era in which tobacco restrictions carry the weight of the Federal government.
