In a review of 10 studies examining early stage lung cancers in smokers and nonsmokers, researchers found an almost 3-fold increased risk of dying from all causes among patients who continued to smoke, compared to those who quit around the time they were diagnosed. This review provides preliminary evidence that smoking cessation after diagnosis of early stage lung cancer improves prognostic outcomes.
