Napthalene, the main chemical in mothballs, is in large amounts in moist snuff, the main kind of chewing tobacco in the United States. Naphthalene is just one of nearly two dozen related chemicals — called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs — that researchers have found in moist snuff. Many of these chemicals are known or suspected to cause cancer.
