A University of Maryland School of Medicine study provides the first direct evidence that cigarette smoke exposure before a heart transplant, in the donor, recipient, or both, accelerates the death of a transplanted heart. Tobacco smoke speeds immune system rejection of the transplanted heart, heightens vascular inflammation, and increases oxidative stress.
