The United States spends about $1.8 trillion a year in medical costs associated with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. All three are linked to smoking and obesity, the nation's two largest risk factors. Smoking is still the number one preventable cause of death in the country, accounting for about 440,000 deaths annually.
