The U.S. government is focusing its efforts on vaccine development as a new way to treat and possibly prevent addiction to a range of substances, including nicotine. The vaccines stimulate the immune system to make antibodies against nicotine, blocking its rewarding effects and helping to prevent relapse in smokers trying to quit.
