Beginning October 1, 2009, Avis and Budget become the first major car rental companies to ban smoking in their entire North American fleets and to impose a cleaning fee of up to $250 on customers who smoke in the cars. A spokesperson for Avis Budget Group said that the number one request from customers is for a smoke-free car. A common customer complaint is that a car smells of smoke.
