National Institutes of Health (NIH) researchers have identified a specific genetic variant that makes some smokers more susceptible to lung cancer, other diseases, and nicotine addiction. Carriers of this genetic variant are more likely than noncarriers to be heavy smokers, dependent on nicotine, and less likely to quit smoking.
