Researchers at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) report that the effect of nicotine on the brain may worsen post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among smokers. Although some PTSD patients say cigarettes improve their mood when they're having symptoms, scientists explain that nicotine's known ability to sharpen attention may actually reinforce bad memories.
