Smoking near pregnant women and babies should be seen as unacceptable and dangerous. A British study examined data about the link between smoking and cot death, also known as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). In more than 8 in 10 cases, the mothers of babies who died from SIDS smoked during pregnancy. Smoking in pregnancy means babies have four times the risk of dying from SIDS.
