Shasta County, California health officials are bemoaning their ranking of having the second highest mortality rate of California's 58 counties, especially since most of the deaths were preventable. Tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable, premature death in Shasta County. The county has the fifth worst death rate in California for lung cancer and chronic respiratory diseases.
