A Scandinavian study shows that if smokers scheduled for surgery begin a smoking cessation program before the procedure, their rate of post-op complications lowers significantly. Researchers investigated the effects of a quit-smoking program versus no intervention, starting 4 weeks before general and orthopedic surgery. The overall postoperative complication rate was significantly lower in the smoking-cessation group than in the control group.
