Researchers at the University of Minnesota found that smoking and binge drinking can cause large drops in school grades. Approximately 10,000 students from 14 Minnesota colleges were asked about about the effects of stresses like alcohol and tobacco use and exposure to television, computers, and video games on their overall academic performance. Students who smoked in the last 30 days had a mean GPA of 3.12 versus the 3.28 mean GPA of nonsmokers.
