On May 22, 2008, a discarded cigarette butt ignited cans of refrigerant compressor oil, paper, and clothing, causing a raging fire in the lower aft decks of the nuclear-powered carrier George Washington. The fire took 12 hours to contain, injured 37 crew members, damaged 80 spaces, and cost $70 million for repairs. It was the biggest carrier fire since the 1967 blaze aboard the carrier Forrestal.
