South Korean researchers suggest that smokers are putting themselves at higher risk for metabolic diseases such as diabetes. The blood levels of adiponectin were lower among men who smoke. Adiponectin is a protein hormone secreted by fat cells and regulates how the body processes sugar and fatty substances in blood. It may result in type-2 diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
