Researchers examined the association between smoking and bipolar disorders (BPD). Youths with BPD were more likely than controls to have alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence, drug abuse, drug dependence, and cigarette smoking than controls. It is important for clinicians to screen youth with BPD for cigarette and other substance use.
