Researchers at Stanford University and at the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco examined tobacco industry documents dating back to the 1930s. It turns out that as far back as the 1930s and 40s, two-thirds of the top 50 box office stars in Hollywood endorsed tobacco brands for advertising purposes and were paid a great deal to do so. Study authors claim that this has contributed to completely embedding smoking into the culture of Hollywood.
