Ex-smokers Lower Their Cardiovascular Risk

Quitting smoking lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke, but the benefits of just reducing tobacco use are less clearcut. Study participants who quit smoking had significantly lower risks of stroke and heart attack--about 40 and 60 percent lower--respectively, compared with heavy smokers.
