Study Examines Association of Smoking With Hemorrhage After Throat Surgery

Sean M. Demars, M.D., a physician formerly at the Madigan Army Medical Center and now stationed at the Bassett Army Community Hospital in Fort Wainwright, Alaska, led a study examining the association between smoking and post-surgical hemorrhage in tonsillectomy patients, who also undergo uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP, a surgical procedure used to remove excess tissue from the throat). Dr. Demars found a higher rate of hemorrhage in the smoking patients.
