British tobacco control advocates state that smoking in films continues to be a "major and persistent driver" for smoking initiation among children and young individuals. The U.K. Center for Tobacco Control Studies has tried, unsuccessfully, to convince the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) and the government's Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) to reclassify films that contain smoking scenes into the same category applied to films that contain sex and violence.
