The billionaire duo of Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, and Michael Bloomberg, mayor of New York City, are planning to pump a combined $500 million through the year 2013 to combat the global tobacco epidemic, with a focus on developing countries. These efforts will add momentum to the endeavors by global health organizations to ban smoking and create smoking-cessation programs. The World Health Organization has gotten more than 150 countries to sign on to an anti-tobacco treaty, the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
