A Columbia University study determined that nonsmokers who are married to smokers have a significantly higher risk for experiencing a stroke. Former smokers married to men and women who still smoke carry an even greater stroke risk. The study provides key evidence of the general dangers of secondhand smoke, and, in particular, the significant and often overlooked danger of heart disease.
