Study Shows Smokers Cling to Old Fears About the Health Effects of Smoking Cessation Treatments

A new study reveals that many smokers have misperceptions about the health effects of using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), thus many do not use NRT and fail when trying to quit smoking. Specifically, 93 percent did not know smoking while wearing the nicotine patch does not cause heart attacks. In addition, 76 percent did not know NRT is not as addictive as cigarettes. Further, 69 percent did not know NRT products are not as harmful as cigarettes.
