In three Nordic countries, 400 people are taking part in a clinical vaccine study conducted by Independent Pharmaceutica, a Swedish private company. The vaccine induces antibodies against nicotine. According to researchers, it eliminates the positive reinforcement smokers derive from nicotine by creating antibodies that bind to nicotine molecules, making them too bulky to enter the brain. Independent Pharmaceutica hopes to have the vaccine on the market within three years.
