A long-term study in the U.K. of 4,968 women born in 1958 examined the incidence and causes of premature menopause (POF), the onset of menopause before age 40. In addition to the influence of social class, there was a strong independent association with smoking. POF is associated with infertility, significantly increased morbidity and mortality, and decreased quality of life.
