Scientists at the University of Utah and the University of Wisconsin at Madison determined that individuals who inherit one type of linked set of genetic variations are at higher risk of heavy nicotine dependence if they start smoking before age 17. Another linked gene variation -- called a haplotype -- seems to reduce the risk of addiction among young smokers.
