A study conducted at the National Institute of Health and Medical Research in France determined that smokers seem to suffer a mental decline in middle age, performing more poorly on tests of memory, reasoning, vocabulary, and verbal fluency than nonsmokers. The study tracked smokers and nonsmokers for 17 years, starting when they were aged 35-55.
