Researchers analyzed the complex ingredients in new dissolvable tobacco products, concluding that the pop-into-the-mouth replacements for cigarettes cause mouth diseases and other problems. Nicotine is a toxin and coumarin has been banned as a flavoring agent in food because of a risk of liver damage. The products, which appeal to young people and which dissolve inside the mouth near the lips and gums, may not be a safer alternative to cigarette smoking. Children may be accidentally poisoned by the nicotine in them.
