University of Wisconsin-Madison scientists have found a link between smoking and the development of one of the leading causes of blindness, age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The disease causes the central area of the retina, which has the sharpest vision, to deteriorate. The more a person smoked, the greater the likelihood of developing macular degeneration.
