Secondhand Smoke Puts Kids at Risk for Meningitis

Children exposed to tobacco smoke during their mother’s pregnancy or later in the home are at greatly increased risk of invasive meningococcal disease. This disease is a major cause of bacterial meningitis and can cause severe illness when bacteria invade the blood, lungs or joints.
