A study of patients at a Massachusetts hospital found that 18.4 percent of those who smoked reported doing so during their hospital stay; those most likely to keep smoking as inpatients included younger smokers with no intention to quit. Assessment of cigarette cravings, routine order of nicotine replacement therapy on admission and expansion of hospital smoke-free policies could cut patient smoking while hospitalized.
