Most adult outpatient visits to physician offices between 2005 and 2008 included screening for tobacco use; yet only about 1 in 5 patients who were identified as current tobacco users received tobacco cessation counseling and only 1 in 13 received tobacco cessation medication. The Affordable Care Act if carried out and other national actions will boost coverage of tobacco cessation treatment.
