Raising cigarette taxes by $1 a pack would cause many pregnant women to quit smoking and to stay cigarette free after giving birth. Many low-birth weight babies, preterm deliveries, and infant deaths result from smoking while pregnant, yet one in four pregnant women in the U.S. are smokers and most of them refuse to quit during their pregnancy.
