Two medical groups recommend low-dose CT scans for smokers and former smokers aged 55 to 74 who have smoked equal to a pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years or more. People who got low-dose CT screening had a 20 percent lower chance of dying from lung cancer than those who got chest x-rays.
